Lip Augmentation

It is no coincidence that many of today’s celebrities have full, sexy lips. Even the ones with naturally thin lips often have lip augmentation in order to achieve the perfect pout. Throughout history, full lips have been a sign of youth and beauty. However, as we age, lips tend to get thinner due to diminishing levels of collagen in the skin. Lips may also wrinkle making you look and feel older than you really are. Fortunately, lip augmentation is available to give you fuller, younger looking lips that help improve sexual and self confidence.  Lip augmentation can also make your entire face look younger by reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth. Lip augmentation is becoming increasingly popular due to speedy recovery times and quick results.

Candidates for lip augmentation include: people with thin lips; wrinkled lips due to aging or smoking; asymmetrical lips or those in need of lip reconstruction.  For more information about lip augmentation, please visit one of offices in the following convenient Los Angeles locations: Beverly Hills, Encino, Thousand Oaks, Valencia, Pasadena, Long Beach and Oxnard.

Lip Augmentation can be performed through injections of natural or synthetic materials. Below are a few popular lip augmentation procedures to consider:

Collagen:  Collagen is a safe non-surgical approach to replacing the skin's natural collagen. Collagen can be injected in vertical lip lines and along the edge of the lip to enhance the definition of the lip border and make the lips appear fuller and more youthful. Collagen may last up to 3 months.

Captique™: Captique Injectable gel -- a new dermal filler product based on Genzyme's non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) technology. This is a soft tissue filler that enhances lips giving them a naturally full, plumper, youthful look.

Restylane:  Like Captique, Restylane is a premier wrinkle filler because it is a safe, non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. It is injected to fill out creases and lines and gives your lips a fuller, plumper, youthful look. Both Captique and Restylane last approximately 4-6 months.

Juvederm ™ has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid currently in a filler-- making it smoother than other fillers. Due to the high concentration of hyaluronic acid and a smooth formula, Juvederm™ will enhance your lips up to 6 months.

Fat Transfer: For permanent, natural enlargement of the lips, fat can be harvested from one area of the body and reinjected into the lips.  Fat injections have the advantage over other fillers because it is permanent but some patient may experience lumpiness. Your surgeon at will help you make the lip augmentation choice that is right for you depending upon your health and aesthetic goals.

Immediately After Surgery—Your recovery

Please note: These are general recovery guidelines and will vary depending upon the type of procedure performed and your medical history.  Always follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully and call him or her if you have any questions or run into any problems before or after your surgery.

  • For planning purposes, give yourself one week of rest for your recovery. You should be able to return to work after a week.  Male breast reduction surgery is an out patient procedure so you should be able to go home several hours after your surgery.
  • Do not take aspirin or any anti-inflammatory drugs/NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin or Alleve during your recovery. These medications are blood thinners and can cause complications after surgery. In addition, do not take any vitamins, supplements or herbal supplements during your recovery, unless your surgeon instructs you to do so.
  • MEDICATIONS: Take the antibiotics and pain medication your surgeon prescribed according to the pharmacy instructions. Don’t take pain medication on an empty stomach, as it may cause nausea and vomiting. You do not have to take the pain medicine if you are not in pain, but you must take all of your antibiotics.
  • The first 2-3 days your chest will be swollen and bruised.  You will be given pain medication to alleviate the pain. You will probably have to wear an elastic pressure garment for several weeks. The worst of the swelling and bruising should subside after several weeks but there still may be some slight swelling for several months.
  • Healing is a gradual process and it may take from 3-12 months before you see the final results.
  • Your surgeon will give you specific bathing and sleeping instructions.
  • CALL YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE: A) severe pain not responding to pain medication; B) substantially more swelling and/or pain on one side than the other; C) if you have drains that are filling too rapidly (your surgeon will review prior to surgery); or D) infection or fever. However, Don’t Take Any Chances! Call immediately if you have any questions or concerns about your recovery. During office hours, or after hours, call 1(800)788-1416.
  • There may be some scarring but it will eventually fade and become less noticeable. Do not exposure scars to the sun.
  • Driving: You should not drive for at least a week or more after surgery and should NEVER drive while taking pain medications. Please note: speak to your surgeon about when it is safe for you to start driving again because he or she knows your medical history.
  • Activity restrictions: Getting up and walking several times a day is encouraged to improve circulation and reduce the chance of blood clots.  You may resume light activities after a few days. Avoid strenuous activity for 3-4 weeks and DO NOT carry anything heavy such as weights, bags or packages for 4 weeks.  Any activity that risks blows to the chest should be avoided for at least a month. Avoid sexual activity for as least a week. Your surgeon will monitor your recovery and will let you know when you can resume your usual physical activities.
  • POST-OPERATIVE APPOINTMENTS: Make sure you keep all poster-operative appointments. It is very important that your surgeon is able to see you and monitor your recovery.
